The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald was first
\npublished in 1872. The book had an enormous effect on many of the now more
\nfamous authors who came later such as C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. The
\ngoblins that Tolkien has in his book were heavily influenced from The
\nPrincess and the Goblin. Also, Lewis references the book in his Space
\nTrilogy.<\/p>\n
In the book the princess Irene lives in the castle, which is
\nlocated in a tiny mountain village. Irene usually spends her time in her
\nluxurious nursery with her nurse, Lootie. When Irene is outside, she will go
\naround to the flowers in the garden and talk to them. Unfortunately, the
\nprincess is not allowed outside after dark, which greatly disappoints her.
\nThen, one day, Lootie and Irene were out too late on the mountain and, in
\ntheir haste to get home, they got lost. And just like that, Irene’s
\nadventures began.<\/p>\n
The Princess and the Goblin is a delightful and well-written book.
\nBecause it was full of adventure and incredible bravery it quickly became
\none of those books that can’t be put down. The author wove the message of
\ntrust and the benefit of truth into the story and he continues with this
\ntheme in the sequel The Princess and Curdie. I would highly recommend this
\nbook to anyone who likes gripping tales full of adventure.<\/p>\n
