The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald was first
published in 1872. The book had an enormous effect on many of the now more
famous authors who came later such as C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. The
goblins that Tolkien has in his book were heavily influenced from The
Princess and the Goblin. Also, Lewis references the book in his Space
Trilogy.
In the book the princess Irene lives in the castle, which is
located in a tiny mountain village. Irene usually spends her time in her
luxurious nursery with her nurse, Lootie. When Irene is outside, she will go
around to the flowers in the garden and talk to them. Unfortunately, the
princess is not allowed outside after dark, which greatly disappoints her.
Then, one day, Lootie and Irene were out too late on the mountain and, in
their haste to get home, they got lost. And just like that, Irene’s
adventures began.
The Princess and the Goblin is a delightful and well-written book.
Because it was full of adventure and incredible bravery it quickly became
one of those books that can’t be put down. The author wove the message of
trust and the benefit of truth into the story and he continues with this
theme in the sequel The Princess and Curdie. I would highly recommend this
book to anyone who likes gripping tales full of adventure.
