The Speyer School was New York City’s experimental school for exceptional learners in the 1930s, led by gifted education pioneer Leta Hollingworth. It soon became apparent that the gifted students at the school could do the standard New York City curriculum in half the time, and the question became how to meet the needs of these children in school without hurrying them off to college at an unacceptably young age.

A series of units on the theme “The Evolution of Common Things” was prepared for these gifted children. These units were specifically developed as enrichment for the children and became part of the foundation of America’s first gifted program. We are pleased to offer reproductions of four of the units.
