This text is the long awaited sequel to Lingua Mater: Language Lessons from Literature. It is intended for 8th or 9th grade and includes 36 weeks of lessons with a nine-week short story unit that includes the complete text of six short stories.

It continues the method begun in Lingua Mater of integrating grammar exercises with response to literature and art and using that as a springboard to good writing. Every piece of literature or art featured is by an American author or painter, such as Mark Twain, Nathaniel Hawthorn, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent.

All selections are by American authors, some contemporary (homeschool moms, Dawn Hanigan and Suchi Myjak as well as Elaine Woodfield). Please see the table of contents (Table of Contents_LMA) for the complete list of topics covered.

4Practice I is a supplement to The Magic Lens I  and is the practice workbook for the fifth level of the MCT language arts curriculum. It contains one hundred sentences, and each sentence uses vocabulary from The Word Within the Word I and the poetic devices studied in Poetry and Humanity. Students work through the sentences using the unique four-level analysis method that is explained in The Magic Lens I. The focus of the sentences is on ancient Greek and Roman history, with particular emphasis on the Latin and Greek stems found in some of the words.

Each sentence appears on a separate page with four blank lines beneath it where students can fill in the parts of speech, the parts of the sentence, phrases, and clauses. By examining a wide range of sentences, students will experience the satisfaction of a clear understanding of the principles of English sentences.
