Simply Classical Curriculum: Storytime Treasures Set

After completing our Kindergarten phonics program, first graders are prepared to plunge right into real books, such as the five little classics in StoryTime Treasures Set. Real books, as opposed to controlled vocabulary readers, capture the imagination of children and motivate them in their reading lessons. Our study guide, StoryTime Treasures, written by Highlands Latin School teachers Mary Lynn Ross and Tessa Tiemann, teaches a variety of language skills in the engaging context of favorite books. Vocabulary, spelling, composition, capitalization, punctuation, and more are included. Your child’s classical education will be off to a superb start with these enduring and timeless classics. And he or she will be well prepared to complete first grade with the next set of classics in More StoryTime Treasures.

The StoryTime Treasures Teacher Guide gives you all the answers to the questions, vocabulary, etc., found in StoryTime Treasures, as well as essential and recommended phonetic activities for every lesson, so you have the tools you need to guide your student through this first grade literature program!

Students who have completed First Start Reading Books A-D successfully are prepared to read Little Bear early in first grade as part of our StoryTime Treasures Set. But even Little Bear, which is a level 1 I Can Read Book, has many sight words and advanced phonograms that students either haven’t learned or hasn’t mastered. It is the nature of English that simple common words are often irregular or have advanced phonograms. This is what causes the transition from phonics to reading in English to be so difficult. These preparatory skills are not for mastery learning but rather exposure to the more advanced phonograms students are seeing in their literature. It takes much practice and phonetic support in first grade for the student to become a fluent reader. We strategically coordinate the start of StoryTime Treasures with Lesson 5 of Traditional Spelling. All phonetic support to aid in student success is included within the StoryTime Treasures Teacher Guide.

How does Simply Classical Level 1 compare to the Memoria Press Kindergarten Curriculum?

Similarities

A student can transfer successfully to Memoria Press First Grade from either program.
Both provide clear introductions to reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Both offer enrichment in music, art, science, poetry, and literature.
Both are 5-day programs that can be taught as 4-day, if you combine lessons.
Both offer recitations, copybook, and other expected elements of a classical curriculum.

Differences

SC 1 includes fewer writing requirements, such as shorter verses in the Bible copybook and one less phonics workbook.
In SC 1, some oral or multi-sensory exercises replace some written exercises.
SC 1 includes ample multi-sensory techniques for teaching reading and arithmetic. While many MP K students do not require these, our SC students benefit from teaching with multiple modalities, providing more repetition, and engaging in extra practice.

Course Description

Prayer
Each day opens and closes with prayer, as the child receives a gently liturgical approach to his day.

Devotion
In Level C, we introduce praying for others and service to others as an outgrowth of Christian faith. Devotional readings linked to each letter of the alphabet reinforce multiple lessons simultaneously.

Recitation
Even in the homeschool setting, a formal recitation gives the child control over his mind and body by memorizing and speaking the early components of knowledge and wisdom.

Order and Routine
Level C helps the child understand the patterns of time through the use of a calendar and a clock. Daily discussions about weather help him observe the seasons.

Wonder in Nature
In Level C, the child hears amazing information about animals. Each lesson integrates the alphabet while introducing the child to a fascinating world beyond his own house. For the older special-needs child who needs instruction in the alphabet, numbers, and character, the animal lessons provide a deeper level of study than he might otherwise find in a readiness level. The animal studies foster a sense of wonder. These lessons also help prepare the child for the requisite concentration, listening skills, and attention span in his upcoming years while helping him appreciate the integration of learning, even at introductory levels.

Writing
Through Level C, you can help your child develop good early habits. He will learn and practice a proper pencil grip and proper letter formation throughout the year.

Show and Tell
Not limited to a school setting, this can be renamed Conversation, especially if other children cannot be present to listen. The child can prepare and deliver a simple talk about the topic or object, he can answer questions and practice his oral language skills in this way, or he can engage in a conversation with you. Regardless of the approach, this element of Level C allows for frequent opportunities to practice speaking clearly.

Aesop, Music, Books, Poetry, and Enrichment
Level C allows for the development of readiness skills while encouraging a delight in words. Enjoy!

Closing Prayer
The closing prayer of Level C helps the child see his own role in the world as one of loving service.

Product Description

Prayer
Level B can be challenging, because of the emphasis on attention to detail and fine-motor skills. For this reason, each day is bathed in prayer and Bible stories. The child learns to say simple prayers of thanksgiving, mealtime prayers, bedtime prayers, and prayers of petition. Even the nonverbal child can participate by folding his hands, bowing his head, and listening, as you pray for him.

Order and Routine
Lessons in Level B, if conducted in the same order each day, will provide structure and routine to the child’s days. If needed, feel free to divide the lessons in Level B into two time segments each day, perhaps morning and afternoon.

Recitation
In Level B the child learns to memorize. If he is nonverbal, say these for him and encourage approximations whenever he is able to participate. The daily repetition will assist his memory, even if his oral language has not yet developed. For the child with adequate oral language, insist on standing and reciting daily with good posture and no fidgeting. This practice develops poise, even as he strengthens his memory.

Letter Identification and Letter Sounds
To develop ear training, we work all year in Level B on the names and sounds of letters. Athough flash cards are introduced, you will not labor over these. Instead, you will guide the child through the visual review quickly, as with an enjoyable game or contest.

Number Identification, Number Concepts, and Counting
We work all year in Level B on the names and values of numbers. We incorporate fine-motor activities into these lessons, because so many children with special-needs require extra practice with fine-motor skills. Level B’s lessons help you teach the vocabulary for quantity (numbers, shapes, and sizes).

Enculturation and Literature
In Level B, we help you teach the games, songs, stories, and rhymes “every child should know.” Enjoy these! They serve a dual purpose of enculturation and a welcome rest from so many fine-motor activities!

Etiquette and Manners
Special-needs children benefit from instruction, coaching, and practice in being courteous. The child learns to say please and thank you, to say, “I’m sorry,” and how to take turns. Manners instructions and practice are woven throughout Level B in books, activities, and lessons.

Enrichment and Therapies
In the Level B planner, we include space in the lesson plans to record your own child’s therapy exercises. For those who do not have such therapeutic assistance, we offer suggested enrichment ideas.
